A theme for every moment of the year
Summer, birthdays, pancake day and Chinese New Year join the themes. Taste, music and the mountains now have their page and their moment in the year.
Lexikit has four more themes: summer, birthdays, pancake day and Chinese New Year. Taste, music and the mountains already existed in the app. They now have their page on the website and their moment in the year. Each theme has its picture dictionary, bingo and memory game as PDFs, and six ready sentences for the sentence resources.
The calendar of a class
Going through the themes month by month, I noted moments that preschool classes live and that were missing. Summer was missing among the seasons, although the seasons frieze comes back every year. Pancake day, on 2 February in France, brings the pancakes and the steps of the recipe. Chinese New Year, in January or February, brings the dragon, the chopsticks and the firecrackers. There are also a tasting week in October, a music day on 21 June and the winter holidays in the mountains.
Birthdays have no month, since they come back each time a child in the class grows up. Their words were mixed with those of the school fair. The school fair theme therefore keeps to the show and the stalls, with the audience, the parents and the sack race.
Three themes on the home screen, the shortest first
The home screen of Lexikit shows three themes of the moment. With the new themes, some months have more than three, and a choice had to be made. A short moment comes before a whole season. In October, Lexikit shows taste and Halloween before autumn, which started in September. In June, the school fair and music come before the garden. On the website, every theme of the month keeps its “Right now” sticker.
Pictures checked one by one
The words were checked one by one with their picture, to make sure it shows what the child names. The word “ball” showed a football, including in the carnival and the school fair. In the party themes, it shows a balloon. “Ice cream” shows a cone. “Parade” is left out of Chinese New Year, because its picture shows the Three Kings.
Mother's Day, Father's Day and April Fool's Day have no theme. They have few words of their own, and families are not all alike. To suggest a theme, the “Tell me” link at the bottom of the themes window sends me a message.
