In one minute!
In the “In one minute!” activity, the class names as many words as possible before time runs out. Each word named is revealed on screen.
“In one minute!” hides all the pictures of the resource and starts the timer. Each word named is revealed with a tap. At the end, the screen shows how many words were found.
The effort of recalling
Retrieving a word without seeing it is harder than recognising it among others. This effort also strengthens the memory of the word: each time a word is retrieved from memory, it becomes easier to find the next time. This is the testing effect, which Stanislas Dehaene describes in Apprendre ! (2018): testing yourself fixes a memory better than rereading. The Eduscol guide on preschool vocabulary (2020) describes the same difficulty for the pupil: “The words already met are there, but the pupil sometimes has trouble mobilising them” (page 30, translated from French).
For every age
The words to find can show as silhouettes, for the youngest, or stay hidden. You can play as a whole class, in teams or alone.
