The three stages of learning a word
Understand, memorise, reuse: the activities of Lexikit follow the three stages of learning a word.
The French nursery school programme sums up learning a word in three stages: understand, memorise, reuse. With “Say the word”, the activities of Lexikit cover all three.
In bingo, the pupil hears the word and points to the picture: they understand it. The memory game and “Hidden picture” then ask them to find it again without seeing it, to memorise it. With “Say the word” or Happy Families, they finally use it themselves.
This last stage is the longest. The Eduscol guide on vocabulary in nursery school (2020) says so: “The vocabulary a pupil has is much richer in reception than in production” (page 30, translated from French).
